A note on "Approximation schemes for a subclass of subset selection problems", and a faster FPTAS for the Minimum Knapsack Problem

چکیده
Pruhs and Woeginger [10] prove the existence of FPTAS’s for a general class of minimization and maximization subset selection problems. Without losing generality from the original framework, we prove how better asymptotic worst-case running times can be achieved if a ρ-approximation algorithm is available, and in particular we obtain matching running times between maximization and minimization subset selection problems. We directly apply this result to the Minimum Knapsack Problem, for which the original framework yields an FPTAS with running time O(n/ǫ), where ǫ is the required accuracy and n is the number of items, and obtain an FPTAS with running time O(n/ǫ), thus improving the running time by a quadratic factor in the worst case.

A Faster FPTAS for the Unbounded Knapsack Problem
The Unbounded Knapsack Problem (UKP) is a well-known variant of the famous 0-1 Knapsack Problem (0-1 KP). In contrast to 0-1 KP, an arbitrary number of copies of every item can be taken in UKP. Since UKP is NP-hard, fully polynomial time approximation schemes (FPTAS) are of great interest. Such algorithms find a solution arbitrarily close to the optimum OPT(I), i.e. of value at least (1− ε)OPT(...

We address a variant of the classical knapsack problem in which an upper bound is imposed on the number of items that can be selected. This problem arises in the solution of real-life cutting stock problems by column generation, and may be used to separate cover inequalities with small support within cutting plane approaches to integer linear programs. We focus our attention on approximation al...
متن کاملMinimizing a General Penalty Function on a Single Machine via Developing Approximation Algorithms and FPTASs
This paper addresses the Tardy/Lost penalty minimization on a single machine. According to this penalty criterion, if the tardiness of a job exceeds a predefined value, the job will be lost and penalized by a fixed value. Besides its application in real world problems, Tardy/Lost measure is a general form for popular objective functions like weighted tardiness, late work and tardiness with reje...
متن کاملAn approximation algorithm and FPTAS for Tardy/Lost minimization with common due dates on a single machine
This paper addresses the Tardy/Lost penalty minimization with common due dates on a single machine. According to this performance measure, if the tardiness of a job exceeds a predefined value, the job will be lost and penalized by a fixed value. Initially, we present a 2-approximation algorithm and examine its worst case ratio bound. Then, a pseudo-polynomial dynamic programming algorithm is de...
متن کاملEstimation of Software Reliability by Sequential Testing with Simulated Annealing of Mean Field Approximation
Various problems of combinatorial optimization and permutation can be solved with neural network optimization. The problem of estimating the software reliability can be solved with the optimization of failed components to its minimum value. Various solutions of the problem of estimating the software reliability have been given. These solutions are exact and heuristic, but all the exact approach...
